Vidalia: Nothing to Cry About

Located on Phillips Avenue in Lawrenceville, this hidden treasure has one of the most unique settings I've ever experienced. Its cottage-like exterior gives way to a comfortable atmosphere that awaits those who visit.  With approximately 15 tables, Vidalia Restaurant truly leads "the pack" thus far, as the most intimate but also, very comfortable establishment.  After I walked in, I immediately felt relaxed and at home.

I have to admit that I went a little 'overboard' with the amount that I ordered but, with so many salivating choices, I couldn't resist. For the first course, I began with the appetizer special. The dish was a pyramid of delight that was stacked high with chopped tuna sashimi, baby arugula and roasted red peppers. All of this was topped with wasabi, balsamic vinegar and served with a shot of soy. It was a Japanese dish with an Italian twist and absolutely gorgeous presentation. The mixture of textures and tastes blended beautifully.

For the main course, I selected the Pollo Rollentino. As the menu quotes, it is a "hand rolled breast of chicken pan seared, stuffed with spinach, gorgonzola and proscuitto, served with a cognac mushroom demi cream sauce." The chicken was cooked to perfection and the mushrooms tasted so fresh and as though they were hand picked from a garden. All of this was doused in the demi cream sauce that was the nothing less than spectacular.

Last, but not least, I had to save room for desert which was an easy decision - homemade Tiramisu. Many years ago, when I returned from studying in Italy, I never thought I would find my way back to those tastes that reminded me of the cobblestone streets and smells of fresh pastry shops. But, this was amore!

Vidalia is a great B-Y-O-B restaurant for a romantic date night or, a great place to catch up with old friends. As I mentioned before, the size of the restaurant is a bit tight so, I strongly recommend reservations. Parking is readily available and located right across the street.  Although it was slightly chilly (30 degrees to be exact), eating outside was not an option but, the idea is something I will surely revisit when spring arrives!
*If you can't stay for dinner, there is always take out. Ordering online is available!

Take-In: Quick Cooking

So, I know that my blog is dedicated to reviewing local restaurants and eateries but, I thought I would share some insight into "quick cooking." Contrary to popular belief, I love to cook when I'm not arriving home after 8 o'clock at night (a rarity).

In the event that the refrigerator is not stocked up, I run to my closest Wegman's. That's right, I said it...Wegman's. I'm not sure what I love more - the food that they offer or, the fact that each meal has a calorie count in front of where it is displayed.

So, for those of you that don't have much time or, need some quick creativity, I hope the meal below helps to inspire!

Wegman's Crab Cake (can be purchased with 2 sides for $10 and comes with a fabulous sauce)
Wegman's Potato Salad

and....my favorite salad in the whole world!

Wegman's Romaine lettuce
Fresh tomatoes (or roasted from the olive bar)
Chopped onions
Prosciutto de Parma, chopped
fresh Mozzarella, chopped

Personally, I like to visit my local Italian food store, Dolce and Clemente's that has a great selection of meats, cheeses, and where I get the Prosciutto and fresh Mozzarella. If you're up for dessert, they make a fantastic fried cheesecake roll and excellent pastries that are sure to please!

Add a little bit of salt, pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a drizzle of the secret ingredient: Gocce Saba Mosto D'Uva Cotto, a dressing from William's Sonoma.

Enjoy!!!

Must Sea-food

I am so excited to write this entry about my ultimate favorite seafood restaurant in the Princeton area - Blue Point Grill. For those of you that haven't had the opportunity to visit this outstanding establishment, make it a priority to go, or run there...as soon as possible! There is no doubt why this restaurant has quickly gained in popularity amongst the Princeton community.

For a long time, I avoided this restaurant on weekends as the wait time usually exceeded an hour and they did not take reservations but, times have-a-changed. Reservations are now accepted and a very important part to your visit. I strongly recommend calling as soon as you decide to go. If you don't have the time to call, don't be discouraged as they are also featured on opentable.com.

From the moment you enter, you understand the exclusivity of the restaurant with its intimate setting and tables situated closely together. Don't be disappointed to hear that there aren't any specials because, the 'specials' are in fact the fresh seafood listed on the black board upon entry. The menu is created daily with fish that is shipped to order almost every day. Whatever fish you can think of (and even those you couldn't have imagined) are on the menu.  And, for the ones you have never heard of, each server is very knowledgeable of the textures, and can compare the fish to ones that you are more comfortable with and have probably eaten before.

If you're feeling adventurous or, if your heart desires oysters, this is the place to indulge as much as possible. Kidding aside, I am an oyster lover and have NEVER, I repeat NEVER, eaten oysters as amazing as they are served here. I personally recommend the Kumamoto; light, pillowy and completely brineless. But, it depends on what you're looking for. Either way, they have it all and once again, servers will be able to describe taste and texture to a "t." Also, something you won't find at other oyster houses is the vignette that is served with them which takes the taste from amazing to over-the-moon.

Additional appetizer favorites (not in any particular order) include the crab meat martini: a martini glass filled with lump, fresh crab meat, guacamole and surrounded on a plate of multi-color chips. A good friend of mine fell in love with the tuna sashimi. So much so, that when they took it off the menu, she boycotted the restaurant and continued to email them until they put it back it on the menu. The shrimp cocktail is also a favorite with the most plump and fresh shrimp I've ever had.

Now remember, many of the dishes you see on the menu may be repeats that you have seen in other places but, what sets this place a part is the freshness of all of the seafood. Everything seems like it came straight from a fishing boat that day, and ended up on your table.

For my third anniversary, my husband surprised me with a reservation and visit last night!

While I normally stay within my comfort zone of ordering the scallops, yesterday, I reached out and discovered a new favorite - Pumpkin Swordfish. No, the fish itself is not prepared with pumpkin - it's an actual fish. Lightly tinged with orange hues, my decision to order this delectable meal was a great one.  All of the fish served here, is not prepared with sauces that override the delicacy in taste of what you order but, rather has light butter, lemon olive oil, may be some capers...all simplistic.

One of the best parts about this restaurant is that it is B-Y-O-B and, in the event that run out during your meal, there is a liquor store in the next building over. During the summertime, there are seats located outside. In the event your dinner takes you past sunset, creating a slight chill there are standing heaters around each table. If you do decide to just stop in, hostesses are very willing to crack your wine and provide you with glasses while you wait.

I have to mention that while the restaurant is fabulous, it also comes at a cost. There are lower priced items on the menu such like crab cakes, etc. but, be prepared to spend anywhere from $28 - $40 for a plate. This usually includes your fish selection and a side of baked or mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Please don't be discouraged though as this restaurant is worth saving up for.

Parking can sometimes be an issue as what is immediately available in the front is metered but, if you travel done the side streets directly next to the restaurant, there is sure to be a spot. Lastly, I have to mention - since this is mostly written about take out meals - there is a fish market located directly next to the restaurant that features all of the same fish served in the restaurant. You can even purchase pre-prepared meals that you just have to pop into your oven and are just as good at a fraction of the price you would spend in the restaurant.

Again, #1 seafood in Princeton.

Visit soon! Blue Point Grill

Palace (more like "kingdom") of Asia

While Indian food is an acquired taste - much like Japanese or Thai food - once you fall in love, there is no turning back. Off of Quakerbridge Road and situated in a slightly hidden location, is the Palace of Asia.

I was introduced to this restaurant by friends at my previous workplace, and have fallen in love ever since. Upon entering this place, you feel immediately engulfed in indulgence. The exquisite pillars and blissful water fountain heed a relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for business lunch meetings or dinner out with friends and family.

Although the food is a bit pricey, the quality and serving sizes are well worth the money. The lunch buffet however, is a more affordable option that provides a small tasting of their menu items (even though you can eat as much as your heart desires). Every person on their wait staff is welcoming and always willing to share suggestions. It's worth mentioning that they never make you feel like an outsider if you are a first-timer or, need help understanding their menu items.

I strongly recommend the Chicken Cashmere and Paneer Masala at this ultra-"sheikh" hotspot.

Check out their website with fabulous pictures!

Italian Hideaway - Capuano's Ristorante

My first visit to Capuano's Ristorante was for our good friend's Rehearsal dinner several years ago. This establishment is by far, my favorite homestyle, Italian restaurant in the Hamilton area.  Strong words, right? Believe it - especially coming from someone who lived in Italy and whose husband is half Italian.

Each meal is prepared to order and is far superior to your local Olive Garden. Not to mention the best part: four letters, B-Y-O-B. If you've never had antipasto before, this is a great place to start.  All of the chicken dishes I've tried here are delicious but, the one that stands out by far, is the Chicken Romano.

When in doubt, never shy away from any of the specials. There is one in particular that is frutti di mare-like offering shrimp, clams, scallops and crabmeat served over tortellini with a blush cream sauce. Just describing it makes me want to reach for my stretch pants and head over there!

Unfortunately, the location is a tucked-away spot within a strip mall on Clarksville Road. Unless you pull into the parking lot, you won't be able to see the storefront. The restaurant has a pizzeria located in the front and then a dining room on the side and moving towards the back. As the years have gone by,  others have caught on to this Italian mecca so, if you plan on eating here on Friday or Saturday night, try to make a reservation.

As always, this restaurant offers takeout :)

Round 1: Mo C Mo C

Mid-morning on Sunday afternoon, my husband and I decided to take a stroll down Nassau Street in downtown Princeton. While the spring-like sun glistened onto store windows, we found ourselves "mo-c-ing" into a small Japanese restaurant on South Tulane Street. The bright orange honing doesn't give much clue to the fantastic display inside of this hidden gem. The walls and ceilings are delightfully designed in modern decor featuring wood paneling that surely isn't seen in your grandmothers home. The lines and placement of tables was clean but, not uncomfortable.

We tried a few items that were all equally delicious but, I have to make mention of the Transformer roll. I can't remember what was in it for the life of me, but it was a-ma-zing. The hand rolls were served in "ice cream" cone holder-like trays and each plate was served with simplicity and packed a lot of flavor.

While the ambience is truly worth the visit, this fabulous alleyway eatery has great sushi that is available for takeout. Parking may be a little difficult but, there is a garage within walking distance.

Enjoy!Mo C Mo C
Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States
As a young professional, it becomes increasingly difficult to find my way over to the stove after returning home from extended hours and reaching near exhaustion. After exhausting attempts to find great places to eat; nonetheless, restaurants that offer takeout, I developed this blog to assist Mercer County residents with finding food worth their time.
